“Flattering Speech, Greed, Glory Seeking”

Blessings folk!

Paul continued to remind the Thessalonians about their visit.
How they came.
Why they came.
What they came from (imprisonment in Philippi).
He speaks to what kind of people they proved to be…

1 Th 2:5-6
For we never came with flattering speech,
as you know, nor with a pretext for greed—God is witness—

nor did we seek glory from men, either from you or from others,
even though as apostles of Christ we might have asserted our authority.

Paul and friends did not come with “flattering speech”…speech that had an agenda of false flattery to a purpose.
They did not “puff up” to gain approval.

The Thessalonians knew this.

Nor did Paul/friends come with pretext of greed.
God would witness to this.
Many who come “in the name of the Lord” came with the agenda of greed.
Such was then.
Such is now.
Greed is a driving force behind many…more than most know.

Nor did Paul/friends seek glory from men.
This is a biggie today.
Such petty games of glory.
I’ve literally seen “clergy” (a man-made distinction that is unbiblical and that has brought much harm and division into the Body of Christ) argue over the fact that one spoke from behind the larger pulpit and not the smaller.
Turf arguments.
Foolishness.

We learn here that as apostles, note the plural…Paul, Silvanus, Timothy…,they could have asserted authority with the new believers.
They did not.

Recapping…
Reject…
- flattering speech
- greed
- glory seeking
