“Asahel”

Blessings folk!

When people say the Bible is “boring”, “uninteresting”, etc. I know they have not read it.

Today’s portion of the Davidic story is interesting, sad and gruesome,

We have a detail about the battle we saw in previous verses.

Read carefully…

 2Sa 2:18-23

Now the three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab and Abishai and Asahel;
and Asahel was as swift-footed as one of the gazelles which is in the field.

Asahel pursued Abner and did not turn to the right or to the left from following Abner.

Then Abner looked behind him and said, “Is that you, Asahel?” And he answered, “It is I.”

So Abner said to him, “Turn to your right or to your left,
and take hold of one of the young men for yourself, and take for yourself his spoil.”
But Asahel was not willing to turn aside from following him.

Abner repeated again to Asahel, “Turn aside from following me.
Why should I strike you to the ground?
How then could I lift up my face to your brother Joab?”

However, he refused to turn aside;
therefore Abner struck him in the belly with the butt end of the spear,
so that the spear came out at his back.
And he fell there and died on the spot.
And it came about that all who came to the place where Asahel had fallen and died, stood still.

Remember,
Abner was the leader of the servants of Saul.
Joab was leading a group of David’s servants.

Asahel was fleet-of-foot and was pursuing Abner, apparently to kill him.
Asahel turned neither to the right nor left.

As they were fleeing, Abner cried out to Asahel to “take hold of one of the young men…”.
Abner did not want to fight/kill Asahel.
There were personal relationships to consider.
Abner was bribing Asahel with the booty from someone else.
Abner was willing for someone else to die so that he could live.
Lovely guy.

Asahel was having nothing to do with it.
He pressed on in single focus and apparently caught Abner.
But, it did not go well.

Abner must have executed some jujutsu move.
Abner killed Asahel with the butt end of a spear.
Not just blunt trama.
The spear came out his back.

Asahel fell and died on the spot.
When his fellow servants came to the place they stopped.
They stood still.

Asahel foolishly ran ahead of the other men.
He sought to “settle-things” in his own strength, on his own.
He left the “protection” of the unit.
He paid dearly.

What is the Lord speaking to you in this?
