“What Troubles You?"

Blessings folk!

Fear not!

Think on this portion of the story of Hagar.

Hagar was the hand-maiden of Sarai given to Abram to raise up a son for them…and to fulfill the promise of the Lord…so they thought.

It was actually “man” seeking to fulfill the promise of the Lord in the flesh.
That never works.

Hagar bore Ishmael.
Many years later (15-16 or so) they are sent away.

We pick up the story….

Gen 21:15-18

When the water in the skin was gone, she put the child under one of the bushes.

Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bowshot, for she said, “Let me not look on the death of the child.”
And as she sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept.

And God heard the voice of the boy,
and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What troubles you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is.

Up! Lift up the boy, and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”

Their resources were gone.
Hagar knew that all that was left in the natural was death.
She did not want to see her son die.

But, God heard.
He heard Hagar.
He heard the voice of the boy.

What did the angel say?
“What troubles you, Hagar?”

What a question!
She had been kicked out of the community.
She was in the desert alone with her son.
She expected to die.

The angel then told her to fear not.

Even when resources are totally gone…
Even in the face of death…
Even when all hope is gone…

Fear not.
The Lord would lift the boy up.
The Lord would make the boy a great nation.
He did.

He will.

Fear not!
