The people were filled with anticipation.
They were awaiting Messiah - Salvation.
They wondered if John could be the Christ.

The same is true today.
Folk are longing and looking for salvation, for rescue.
Some place their hope in the end of the world.

Heard of someone like that today.
Today my wife and I met a lady who told us she is attending a funeral.
A friend had died at his own hand.
He had placed his trust in the world ending with the end of the Mayan calendar.
No joke.
The world did not end.
He took his own life a couple of days later.
He was “raised Catholic”, turned to atheism, search out a shaman in South America…
He was retired, wealthy...all that so many seek.
Yet, he ended it.
Hopeless.

If we place our hope in anything other than Messiah we will fail.

People are searching.
They are looking.

Do we point them to the Lord?

We must do as John did.
  • exhort
  • proclaimed good news to the people
  • walk in humility…”unworthy to untie sandals…” too much of the church point to themselves, their organization, their leadership, their good deeds rather than to the Lord.

He told them that he was not Messiah, but that one coming is.

Look how he described the coming Messiah.
  • powerful
  • coming
  • will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire
  • will judge…”winnowing fork is in his hand to clean out his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his storehouse, but the chaff he will burn up with inextinguishable fire.” This is yet to come!

A group had been sent by the Pharisees to question John.
We can expect the same type of questioning and resistance from the “religious leaders” of our time.

Therefore…
  • proclaim the coming of the Lord...past and present
  • exhort people

Trust Him.
