“No Pity”

“No Pity”

Blessings folk!

David had done evil in the sight of the Lord.

He had taken something that was not his…another man’s wife.
He had killed the man to cover the deed.

God was displeased.
The Lord was about to address the situation.
He did so in an interesting way.
He sent someone with a message, a prophet.
The message was a simple, child-like story.

2 Samuel 12:1-6

1 And the LORD sent Nathan to David. He came to him and said to him,
“There were two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor.

2 The rich man had very many flocks and herds,

3 but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb, which he had bought.
And he brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children.
It used to eat of his morsel and drink from his cup and lie in his arms,
and it was like a daughter to him.

4 Now there came a traveler to the rich man,
and he was unwilling to take one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the guest who had come to him,
but he took the poor man's lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.”

5 Then David's anger was greatly kindled against the man, and he said to Nathan,
“As the LORD lives, the man who has done this deserves to die,

6 and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.”

There are several things to consider…

  • David’s heart was revealed. He desired justice. David was righteous, yet imperfect as we are seeing.
  • David desired for restitution to be done.
  • The rich man was very rich, yet he did not want to use his resources. Many are the same today.
  • The poor man had little. He cared for what he did have…
    • Brought it up
    • Grew up with him and his children
    • Ate morsels from the table
    • Drank from his cup
    • Laid in his arms.

Very much a beloved “pet”.

Yet, the rich man cared not.

He took the poor man’s animal for the meal for the traveler.

David immediately responded.
Nathan did not even asked for a point of thought, conclusion, etc.

David immediately judged the situation rightly.
The man deserved to die.
The Word does not say that the man did die, just that he deserved death because of this act.

What was the act?
The act that deserved death?
No pity.

The rich had not pity for the poor.
Worse still, the rich abused the poor.

What does this have to do with David?
We will see next time.

For today, we are all richer than 99.99% percent of all mankind has been.
What are you doing with your riches?
